Jenson Button triumphs as Brawn dominate in Spain

The European leg of the Formula 1 season began with another masterclass from Jenson Button and the Brawn GP team, as the British driver won his fourth race of the season with his team mate Rubens Barichello coming in second.

Mark Webber got one over on his young Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel by claiming third place.

But it was another dismal afternoon for last year's big boys. Ferrari's hopes of a podium finish died an embarrassing death as Felipe Massa ran out of fuel on the final lap and limped home in sixth before his car rolled to a standstill. It was even worse for world champion Lewis Hamilton who ended out of the points and a lap down in ninth.

Home favourite Fernando Alonso came home in fifth as he passed Massa in the final stages.

Button didn't have things all his own way at the start as Barichello raced into the lead from the off. He took his chance as the pole sitter and Vettel concentrated on the threat of Massa and his Kers-enhanced start.

Attention was quickly diverted further down the field though, as a big smash on the first corner took out Jarno Trulli, Sebastien Bourdais, Sebastien Buemi and Adrian Sutil and led to the deployment of the safety car.

That in turn meant Brawn changed Button's race strategy from a three to two pit-stop plan and he drove brilliantly to ensure the switch pay off. By half way he had built up an 11 second lead and eventually cruised home - but not before he lapped the unfortunate Hamilton.

The win gives Button 41 points and puts him 14 points clear of Barichello in the world championship. The nearest non-Brawn driver is Vettel with 23 points.

In the constructors championship the domination is even greater - Brawn are now 29.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Toyota after their second one-two of the season. ·
