The elder son of Formula One chief Max Mosley and the grandson of the British wartime fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley has been found dead at his London home from a suspected drugs overdose.

The body of Alexander Mosley, a 39-year-old economist, was discovered at his mews house in Notting Hill, west London, on Tuesday afternoon. Police said they were called by a relative who discovered Mosley collapsed. Paramedics were unable to revive Mosley and he was declared dead at the scene.

Former Formula 1 team boss and Mosley family friend Eddie Jordan told Sky News today: "Max and particularly Alexander were very close.” He added that father and son shared "a great intellect". Friends have described Alexander as "a maths genius".

He was also a restaurateur. He established the critically acclaimed west London restaurant Hereford Road in 2007 with chef Tom Pemberton, a friend from Westminster School.

Last July his father Max Mosley won £60,000 in damages after the News of the World claimed that he had taken part in a Nazi-themed orgy. Alexander, along with his younger brother Patrick and their mother Joan were said to have been devastated by the revelations about Mosley's sexual activities.

Mosley Senior did not deny that he had taken part in regular sado-masochistic sex sessions – he only refuted the Nazi allegations – and he acknowledged after the High Court trial that his family had been hurt. "It's just very difficult for my wife, it's very difficult for my sons," he said. "But we're all each other have got."

Asked how Max Mosley would be reacting to his son's death, Jordan told Sky News: "I think Max will do his own thing. He will hopefully be able to find some consolation, get the family together. This is a very tragic moment for all of them." He added: "Max has had some problems in the last number of years. I've been a good friend of that family and I'm devastated for them." ·
