Rihanna’s acting debut seen in Battleship promo
Trailer teases fans as R&B singer gets her hands on huge weapon in FBI role
Fans of Rihanna have got their first look at the pop megastar in her movie debut, after Universal released the trailer for its 2012 blockbuster Battleship.
Rihanna's appearance in the promo is brief but tittilating as the R&B singer gets her hands on a huge weapon.
Rihanna plays Raikes, an FBI espionage agent who is brought in to help the US Navy defeat an alien race attacking Earth. The 'alien invasion at sea' film - which is based on the hugely popular boardgame Battleship - also stars Liam Neeson and True Blood's Alexander Skarsgaard.
As Total Film noted, the Barbados-born singer has also "admirably avoided the token hottie role". This seems to have gone to Brooklyn Decker, the former Sports Illustrated model who is engaged to tennis player Andy Roddick.
Technically the role is Rihanna's second film appearance after she made a short cameo in the 2006 cheerleader movie Bring it on: All or Nothing alongside Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere and Beyonce's sister Solange Knowles.
Battleship, however, represents Rihanna's first proper foray into the movie business. Last year she told MTV that working with Hancock director Peter Berg on the film was "unbelievable. I love doing movies now. It's something I want to do more of. I just want to pick films that are wise for me and roles that I can pull off, nothing that is too big for me".
Battleship is due for release in May. ·
