Kate Moss's 'best' nude photo to be auctioned in London
Stunning photo taken nearly two decades ago shows supermodel at beginning of her career
A 1993 PHOTOGRAPH of Kate Moss, which she herself has apparently called one of the best ever taken of her, is to be auctioned at Bonham’s in London next week.
The photo by American Albert Watson was created at the end of a day's shooting on a rooftop in Marrakech, when Moss, just 19 at the time, agreed to let Watson take some nude shots. The result was a haunting black and white image of the young girl from Croydon just as she was being catapulted to fame as the face of the new 'heroin chic' movement in fashion.
It was one of a number of pictures taken for German Vogue, all of which feature the same beautiful figure, her Bambi-like limbs tucked protectively around herself. "I still think these are among the best pictures ever taken of her," said Watson, "and she said so as well recently."
The picture is expected to fetch between £12,000 and £18,000 at auction, but judging on past performances of images of the 37-year-old model, it could go for much more. When another print of the same image was sold at Christie's in 2007, it reached £54,000, nearly five times the pre-sale estimate.
She's a muse who can bring considerable rewards to artists and photographers. In 2005, a painting of Moss by the late painter Lucian Freud sold for £3.93 million at a Christie's auction, while just last month a gold statue of the model in a yoga pose by Marc Quinn fetched £577,250. ·
