Chris Huhne hires Harry Redknapp barrister
Former Lib Dem Energy Secretary faces trial for perverting the course of justice as early as summer
THE FORMER Lib Dem Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has reportedly taken on Harry Redknapp’s QC to defend him at his trial this summer against a charge of perverting the course of justice.
Huhne was told the trial will take place sometime this summer, by early October at the latest, when he and his ex-wife Vicky Pryce appeared this morning at Southwark Crown Court.
In contrast to the frosty atmosphere between the pair at last month’s court hearing, Huhne and Pryce today at least exchanged strained smiles and muttered under their breath, the Independent reports. They were granted unconditional bail until May, when they will be back in court to enter pleas. The BBC reports that Huhne has previously indicated he will plea not guilty, while Pryce is yet to indicate a plea.
Huhne stepped down as Energy Secretary last month to fight his legal battle. It is alleged that Pryce agreed to accept penalty points on her driving licence after Huhne’s car was caught speeding by a roadside camera.
Huhne has engaged the services of John Kelsey Fry QC, the criminal barrister who last month successfully defended Harry Redknapp at a tax fraud trial by arguing that the Tottenham football manager was financially incompetent.
