Jolie returns to Cambodia and bags a fortune
Angelina Jolie said to be paid $10m for Louis Vuitton campaign – but some goes to charity
Angelina Jolie is the latest celebrity to join luxury brand Louis Vuitton's 'core value' advertising campaign, which sees her being photographed and filmed in Cambodia talking about why the country is so close to her heart.
It was there that she filmed the 2001 moviue Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001, the film that would transform her from the little-known Oscar-winning beauty in Girl Interrupted to an international megastar. It was also in Cambodia that she began to take a serious interest in humanitarian work, sparked by the adoption of her first son, Maddox.
The campaign – for which Jolie is rumoured to have been paid as much as $10m – starts with a photo (above) by Annie Leibowitz taken in the swampy region of Siem Reap.
It shows a barefoot Jolie sitting on a wooden river boat, wearing khaki clothes, and with a Louis Vuitton holdall slung over her shoulder. Apparently she insisted on bringing four of her six children with her, who consistently had to be shooed off the set.
The 'Alto' holdall is Jolie's own and, luckily, the real thing, not a Bangkok street-market rip-off. However, it's at least six years old and no longer in production. Louis Vuitton executive vice president Pietro Beccari says they might consider reintroducing it.
Those raising an eyebrow at the enormity of Jolie’s fee should know that, according to Women's Wear Daily, she donated an "undisclosed portion" to charity. ·
