Pro-gun shock jock drowns out Piers Morgan on CNN - video
Morgan is challenged to boxing match by ranting pro-gun advocate Alex Jones
FORMER Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan and US shock jock Alex Jones have been involved in an ugly shouting match on CNN (see video below) over American gun laws. It ended with Jones challenging Morgan to a boxing match to sort out their differences.
The host of The Alex Jones Show is the man who started an online petition to deport Morgan from the US after he called for gun law reform in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre. Jones is vehemently pro the Second Amendment which entitles Americans to bear arms.
Morgan responded by inviting Jones onto his nightly CNN show for a debate, reports The Guardian. The discussion quickly turned ugly when Morgan tried to point to statistics showing that more than 11,000 Americans died in gun-related crime in 2012 while only 35 died in the UK over the same period.
Jones launched into a loud – and at times bizarre - tirade defending his rights. He claimed "1776 [the American War of Independence] will commence if you try and take our firearms - we will not relinquish them, do you understand?"
Jones pointed to the recent murder of Jyoti Singh Pandey, the young Delhi woman who died after a gang inserted an iron bar into her body. "You can't ban the iron rods, the guns - the guns didn't do it, the tyrants did it. Hitler took the guns, Stalin took the guns, Fidel Castro took the guns."
When Morgan tried to press Jones he deflected Morgan’s use of "little factoids" to win the argument, before inviting Morgan to put on a pair of boxing gloves. Earlier he had invited Morgan to go shooting with him and become "an American citizen".
The bad blood between the two men goes back to mid-December when Morgan confronted the pro-gun movement in the immediate aftermath of the Newtown massacre. He called for a ban on high-powered assault rifles and large ammunition magazines after 20 children and six adults were shot dead by Adam Lanza.
