‘No one is crying’, says Beatrice’s hat designer
Philip Treacy defends ‘gorgeous’ royal wedding hat that has internet users in stitches
Philip Treacy, the milliner-to-the-stars responsible for the comical hat worn by Princess Beatrice at the royal wedding last Friday, has gallantly ridden to the minor royal's defence after her choice of headwear became the subject of derision on the internet.
Treacy took full responsibility for the strange, Lady Gaga-esque creation, telling Hollywood Life it had all been his own idea: "My inspiration was beauty and elegance. It's a 21st century royal wedding.
"No, they didn't tell me [what they wanted] because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful. They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation... I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't."
If Beatrice is crying it would be understandable. The reaction on the internet has been ruthless, with one wag on Facebook suggested she ought not to go out in moose-hunting season wearing the creation. However, most people have let Photoshop do the talking.
Collages of famous people wearing the hat - from the Mona Lisa to EastEnders' Dot Cotton - have been posted across the internet. Probably the best - and most Left-field - picture is the one above, in which Obama and his advisers sit in the White House situation room watching the death of Osama bin Laden, each wearing Treacy's outlandish creation. ·

For goodness sake it was a bit of fun. The fact she sat right behind the Queen made it even more so! It flew in the face of normal conventionality, whilst still reflecting a classical theme. What's the matter with everyone nowadays? There's a serious lack of humour about!
Still, it's all in a day's work for the hard-working Princess Beatrice, eh? Justifying why she'll get a generous hand-out for the rest of her worthless Sloane-ranger life.
This was a very important occasion, and for the two princesses to come looking like the Ugly Sisters at a pantomime was inexcusable. Someone in their family should have stepped in and stopped them. Everyone else was dressed elegantly, and they just made themselves a laughing-stock. Guests are supposed to blend in, not draw eyes away from the bride.
