Helena Bonham Carter on getting dressed for Sunday’s Oscars, where she’s nominated for best actress

With four days to go until the Oscars, and Colin Firth such an out-and-out favourite for best actor it's hardly worth discussing, the attention is focusing on his 'Queen' in The King's Speech, Helena Bonham Carter. Can the Londoner win best supporting actress and, just as important, what on earth is she going to look like?

She's certainly in with a chance of the statuette. Though Hollywood predictions appear to favour 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit - debut performances have often been rewarded in this category - the fact that Helena won the Bafta for the role has upped her chances.

But what's exercising the fashion writers is what Helena will wear when she walks up the red carpet on Sunday afternoon in Hollywood.

The 44-year-old actress who first made her name in A Room with a View is well known for her whacky sense of style - Vivienne Westwood is clearly her favourite designer - and she doesn't just keep it for red carpet events. As the residents of Hampstead, north London will attest, she dresses like that all the time.

Asked by Grazia what she's planning for Sunday, she said: "I have a few options, but I haven't made my mind up. It's a work in progress."

But she was quick to defend her style. "I love fashion," she said, "and I love to have fun with it - I'm a firm believer in that.

"But I do put a lot of thought into it... I don't just throw any old thing on."

In other words, if you see Helena Bonham Carter stepping out in one red shoe and one blue, it's no mistake - she planned it that way. "I don't care what anyone else thinks. I dress the way I want to, not for anyone else."
