Daily Mail ‘gay agenda’ column outrages Twitter

Melanie Phillips causes fury on Twitter as she brands gays the ‘new McCarthyites’

BY Jonathan Harwood LAST UPDATED AT 19:00 ON Mon 24 Jan 2011

The Daily Mail is at it again, causing outrage online thanks to one of its columnists. This time it is Melanie Phillips who has sparked a storm of fury on social networking site Twitter, thanks to a piece warning that gays are becoming the "new McCarthyites".

Her article claims that Britain is in the grip of a "Government-backed drive to promote the gay agenda" and that homosexuality is being forced upon schoolchildren.

She claims that subjects like geography and maths are now full of references to gay lifestyles. And she even argues, rather unconvincingly, that teaching kids about "animal species such as emperor penguins and sea horses, where the male takes a lead role in raising its young" is part of a wider gay conspiracy.

"It's all part of the ruthless campaign by the gay rights lobby to destroy the very concept of normal sexual behaviour," she warns.

She springs to the defence of fundamentalist Christians who have found themselves in hot water over their attitude towards gays - for example, hoteliers Peter and Hazelmary Bull, who were sued for turning away a gay couple who wished to share a bed. "Just about everything in Britain is now run according to the gay agenda," she despairs.

Phillips then moves on to the case of Hans-Christian Raabe, a GP who has been appointed to the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. After being handed the role it emerged that he was leading member of the Christian Maranatha Community in Manchester, which actively campaigns against gay rights.

She then moves onto that surefire Mail target, the BBC, accusing the corporation of being "reprehensible" and "partisan" for allowing home editor Mark Easton to write a blog on the issue of Raabe's appointment, which has proved to be somewhat controversial.

Phillips writes: "Anyone who goes against the politically-correct grain on homosexuality or who has robust Christian views must be considered a bigot and thus have no place in public life.

"The obsession with equality has now reached ludicrous, as well as oppressive, proportions."

Melanie Phillips soon became the top trending topic in the country today as the, liberal as ever, Twitterati lined up to take aim at the controversial columnist.

Comedian Mark Thomas tweeted: "I am constantly impressed by Melanie Phillips’ ability to type and wave a pitchfork and flaming torch at the same time."

Another comic, David Schneider, joined the chorus of disapproval, writing: "Melanie Phillips' latest article. Blimey. Can we build a paywall round the Daily Mail website to keep the articles in?"

Others called her rant "disgusting" and "poisonous". Her comments about penguins and seahorses attracted the most ridicule. One user, called JapanCrafts, wrote: "So a male emperor penguin is gay, just because he looks after his kids. Surely that's more of a feminist issue, Melanie Phillips?"

As usual the Daily Mash satire site was quick to pen a spoof version of the piece, under the inspired headline: "Poofter spat in my macaroni, claims angry old woman."

Even on the Mail site itself the reaction was largely negative, with many commentators attacking Phillips's views. But any concerns the paper might have harboured about the column would have been offset by a satisfaction at the publicity, and extra readers, it has generated. ·

i simply am going to say i cannot believe that people are in favor for this type of bullying, it is shocking to know that people want to live in a world where people are not allowed to be themselves. so what if they teach teenagers about gay people it teaches them to be ok with everybody and to treat people with the same respect no matter what or who they are. the whole maths and geography thing was a complete joke. if we lived in her views she wouldn't be working she would be in the kitchen scrubbing floors obeying her husband like a good little wife she wouldn't be allowed to work and have a life of her own so in a way she in contradicting her own opinions by working and wanting the same pay as men! she doesnt deserve to have the job she has, she makes monsters in this world who go out attacking people for who they are and one day it will bite her on the A$$, i think she should be sued for creating hate talk and possible hate crimes and be dismissed from her position!

Hmm. So... Reading this thread, a few interesting things come to light.

Many folks seem to think that it's OK to be hateful of those who are different to them. Well, it's not. It is a core tenet of Christianity to love all of mankind. Christians are supposed to be tolerant and forgiving. So your personal hatred and jealousy is also a sin.

A common justification for the hatred of gays and lesbians on this thread seems to be that they are a "minority" whereas Christians are a "majority". News flash people: we are, all of us, in a minority of one. If we choose to express ourselves in a pure and honest way and be free in ourselves we will all inevitably find ourselves in some kind of "minority". To deny one definable group the same status, privileges and rights as everyone else and justify it because they are a minority is purest hypocrisy. Although I note that some correspondents on this thread proudly admit to being hypocrites as if it is some kind of badge of honour. I feel sorry for these people.

The kind of hatred, ill-will and ignorant bigotry that is on display on this thread tends to say more about those who hold these outdated and untenable views than it does about those who are the object of their hatred. The aggressive and hateful tenor suggests that these bigots are more apt to project their insecurities onto others than face them in a constructive manner. This is a common symptom of being brought up in a way whereby you are encouraged to believe that your "way of living" represents some kind of personal ideal and that anyone who differs from that ideal is somehow abberant and "wrong". This wrongness can be represented by alternative sexualities, different ethnic or racial backgrounds, different religious faiths, those who seek to challnge preconceived gender boundaries (a female linesman, for example), even something as simple as vegetarianism or veganism.

Being forced to face the terrible truth that limiting your horizons, stifling your curiosity and sacrificing your personal autonomy in a bid to strive to conform with what you were led to believe was the "norm" was all for nought does tend to bring out the nasty side in people.

The funny thing is, when faced with these kinds of home truths, "the majority" will simply attack, rather than look inside and realise how wrong they are to be so full of hatred and anger.

Bigots of the world, you will never be free as long as you believe that you are superior and "right" and that anyone who disgrees with you is aberrent and wrong. Wake up to the truth before it is too late and you end up consumed with hatred in a lake of fire.

I fully agree with Melanie Phillips in her column in the Daily Mail.
Gay rights organisations like "Stonewall" are pushing their agenda, thoughts and ideas for all there worth. They use Gay politicians and prominent celebrities to push the "gay agenda" and it is clearly turning in their favour. They have no time for people with any opposing views. How can it be right to push the gay agenda in schools in subjects like Maths and Geography, its simply ridiculous. We should have more people in the media like Melanie Phillips, who are not afraid to speak their mind.

David Robinson, get over YOURself. I never once said that I was somehow a victim and I never once even hinted that I or anyone else should dictate "the lives and rights" of others because we're a majority. I'm just stating the obvious: the reality is that the majority of people are heterosexual, and their rights should not be sacrificed or limited by a minority - that's real life, David; when I was growing up, I was in a minority of a sort, and was constantly picked on and humiliated, but I grew up and learned that those people don't matter at all. I also learned to accept that I was in a minority and that I couldn't be involved in certain groups because of it. But I didn't demand that those people in the majority change their rules, customs, and behavior to accommodate my differences. I just went on a lived a great life, in peace with all the other people who are different for a multitude of reasons.

You can't force people to like you; you can't force people to accept YOUR likes and dislikes; but you CAN demand that you're not persecuted, physically harmed, cheated, or in any other way prevented from living the kind of life you want to live. BUT, in doing so, don't expect everyone else to change their lives to accommodate you; that's just selfish and totally unrealistic.

I had one very close childhood friend who was openly gay back in the 50s and 60s, and even though that majority of us loved and cared for the guy for WHO he was, not WHAT he was, he paid a heavy price for it; that's' NOT acceptable to me or anyone else who believes in individual rights, but, at the same time, he never expected me to embrace his lifestyle and understood that we would live our own separate lifestyles while still being the best of friends. Don't go crazy demanding that the world changes to suit your needs - it won't happen. You deserve and have the right to live anyway you want as long as you don't infringe on other people's rights, and that applies to everyone.

Razzelguts, you're conspiracy theory BS is just that, BS. You are NOT a victim of anything. Freedom of speech is not being taken away from anyone. You can say what you please as long as it fits the guidelines of the law, but there are CONSEQUENCES for every action you take. As for homosexuality on TV, homosexuality is a reality. And since there is NOTHING wrong with being gay, that is also a reality. Why are you so scared of reality? Reality doesn't bite, you just need to accept it instead of being insecure of it.

LeeSouthend=It's not "liberal" or "PC" to call a spade a spade, and treat homophobia like the destructive social and emotional ill it is.

Zhivago=Why do you think you are a victim? You aren't being denied MARRIAGE like same-sex couples. Get over yourself. You are NOT a victim. You are NOT in any position to dictate the lives and rights of others because you're a "majority." Take a civics class. The majority of people are not anti-gay and are actually against homophobia. There is no fairness at play here. Homophobia is NOT protected by anything. You are NOT on the same plane as homosexual persons who are BORN GAY OR LESBIAN, unlike your choice to be a bigot. If you choose to be a bigot, well, there are consequences to that behavior. Freedom of speech works both ways. And you don't have the freedom to deny legal rights or a place in society for legal citizens.

Stewart, you are a trashy individual. Sorry, but in a civil country, all legal citizens require equal rights. You are not special nor a victim because people aren't going to reward you with special privileges, solely because you're white and Christian. You are NOT special.

Michael Jose=The only deviants are anti-gay homophobes. Homophobia is a personality disorder. And as for spiteful and self-centered, that's the main trait of anti-gays by definition. Anti-gays like you are selfish and only care about your own beliefs and indoctrinating and forcing everyone to believe the way you do, and denying legal rights to legal citizens because you're bigoted and cannot live and let live.

Man Shed=She's right? Um, no. No-one said people can't be anti-gay. You can be anti-gay. There are consequences for your choices. That's what people like you don't seem to understand. You have responsibilities for your words.

Well lets see. I agreee with Melanie completely. I persoanlly think that the UK has become a huge cultural experiment. Too much political correctness. Nobody knows where to turn or more rather everybody has to have eyes everywhere for fear of offending. Comment by Dogoyaro or whatever has no relevance. "Straight people like me are in the majority therefore by default is normal. Until such time lets not hypothesise. It is true that this theme of equality is being shoved down our throats too much and over exposure to these "gay" lifestyles is being promoted far too much as normal. I believe that yes if someone is gay let them get on with it but many poeple believe like myself that this is not normal. Men women situation for example what nonsense about Andy Gray. We´ll have to outlaw all comdy shows. Back to Gay Lesbian..abnormal behaviour just look at them in public in bars parties and discos and even public Gay Parades, slathgering all over each other, outrageoous sex acts, grabbing arse etc etc. Never see this level of behaviour en masse with Hets.

It deeply saddens me to read messages of support for this woman and more specifically her view points. I am unsure as to why the people above believe their freedoms and personal beliefs are being intruded upon because, mostly, people are moving to be more accepting and understanding of groups that previously have been on the receiving end of much needless hate, abuse and persecution.
Nobody is asking you to invite these people to sit in your front room at tea time or sleep in your beds.
Instead, you choose to ruthlessly shout about your own feelings of contempt, threat and naivety. Nothing could be further than 'Christian' behaviour.
If you are not going to be more understanding of your neighbours, colleagues or family members, hurry up and grow old - the world will be a much better place without you.

i don't agree with homophobic ,religious, sexism or any other form of attacking people because of their behaviour with in reason or their beliefs. What i disagree with is the fact that positive discrimination is allowed and their ways are allowed to be promoted without fear of anyone being able to voice their opinion against what they are promoting. We are being constantly bombarded with homosexual behaviour on tv, we see demonstrations by muslims and witness the rants by radical preachers. If anyone dares to speak out against any of these the last goverment passed laws to shut you up under the threat of imprisonment and fines. Our free speech as been taken away from us, we are now living under a dictatorship and this conlib government will do nothing to reverse it. Although i don't agrre with all Melanie says, it's about someone stood up for the downtrodden rest of us, we must support people like her,
.

Im tending to agree with Melanie Philips.
The whole tone of the above artical strengthens her point. And dont we now have lessons on being gay in school?
Im not going to go the whole hogg and talk about conspircys or anything but I think liberalism and the political correctness it brings have gone far too far.

I agree entirely with Melanie Phillips, its about time someone stood up in this Country and said what has to be said about Gays and Immigrants. Lets call a spade a spade and call them what they really are, sodomites and buggerers not quite as pleasant as being called Gay. If it is my choice to live in a free, white, christian society why are my choices not upheld, instead im called a racist, homophobiac, bigot etc... the level of Correctness about nearly everything in the world today is actually going to destroy society as we know it!... Also, while we are here, we should'nt have women linesman either, put me down as sexist aswell!...

Melanie Phillips is just stating the obvious. The spite and self-centredness of the 'gay' lobby knows no bounds. They are as devious as the day is long in my experience, which is what I would expect from deviants.

Its people like Melanie Phillips make people FEARFULL to be who they are! lets say that straight people where the minority, would you be happy if people were writing hate articles about you? And just to comment on the homosexual life style being added into maths lessons etc, no thats a lie made up by Melanie Phillips to suit her story no lessons involve being taught of the gay life style, children are taught about homophobia and it is strongly discouraged in most schools, and so it should.

You are off my reading list.

Just for grins, let's turn this around:

"We will NOT let hateful gays and lesbians impose their values on us." This might come from the Christian *majority*... In spite of the mainstream media's bias against the majority, there remains at least TWO sides to this story.

How would you suggest that we solve this problem of fairness? And do you think the majority should forego its rights in order to appease the demands of a very small minority? Sounds a bit topsy-turvy, doesn't it?

Doesn't the crystal night type twitter outrage and this article prove her right ? This is no longer a free country.

WHY exactly newspapers give individuals like Melanie Phillips a tribune to spout their hate and homophobia is beyond me. Her words are not only the product of ignorance and misinformation (she blatantly distort facts to suit her purposes) but cause real harm to gays and lesbians and that will NOT be tolerated. I am glad to see that people are outraged and speak out against her views, coming from a bigone (not to say bigoted) era. Gays and lesbians will NOT be intimidated: we have kids too and they will NOT be taught hatred and homophobia in schools, either. Yes, this article has generated Ifor her and for the journal) a fair amount of attention that is not deserved: but we MUST react to this. We MUST speak out and restore facts, and actually, plain common sense. We will NOT let hateful Christians impose their values on us.
