Miranda Hart, the creator and star of BBC2's family-friendly comedy series Miranda, has picked up three gongs at the British Comedy Awards, including the People's Choice, which is voted for by members of the public.

The visibly shocked actress said she was genuinely "thrilled" to be named the best comedy actress and to win best new TV comedy show at the ceremony on Saturday, held at the O2 Arena in London and broadcast live on Channel Four for the first time.

Host Jonathan Ross, who had to step down from presenting the awards in 2008 after the Sachsgate scandal, mercilessly ribbed his fellow comics and celebrities. His partner-in-crime Russell Brand picked up the outstanding contribution to comedy award and used a video message to poke fun at the now infamous prank call, saying: "Jonathan, you're a father figure, what were you thinking?"

Other than reports of lairy behaviour by Ulrika Jonsson, who according to the Daily Mail, was caught on camera heckling the presenters and was seen to mouth

"You're fucking kidding me" when Shooting Stars lost out to Would I Lie To You for the Best Comedy Panel Show award, things seemed to progress smoothly.

Peter Capaldi, who plays the fearsome Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, won the best TV comedy actor award, Peep Show writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong were handed the Writers' Guild of Great Britain award and Michael McIntyre and Jo Brand were named the best TV comedians.

Charlie Brooker accepted the best comedy entertainment programme award for his satirical show Newswipe, which he said was only made possible by Sky News providing "about 85 per cent" of his material. ·

Miranda Hart is fantastic. Most of the "Stars" are over-sexed, under-dressed, crude and over-paid.
