Is actor Mark Ruffalo on a terrorist watch list?

Homeland Security denies flagging Ruffalo for promoting anti-gas drilling documentary

Mystery surrounds a claim by the Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo, whose recent films include Shutter Island and The Kids Are All Right, that he has been placed on a terrorist watch list after he promoted the anti-gas drilling documentary Gasland.

In an interview with GQ magazine, Ruffalo said that he thought it was “pretty fucking funny” that he had been added to a list of marked activists by Pennsylvania's Office of Homeland Security following screenings of the film, which criticises natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale.

But according to a report in Entertainment Weekly, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security has denied that the actor was ever included on the list, or that any such list existed.

While Ruffalo has admitted he has been prone to exaggeration in the past – last week he revealed on the Late Late Show that he lied to director Ang Lee about his horse-riding skills to secure a role in the western Ride With the Devil - there does seem to be some truth to the story.

A recent report by the non-profit investigative journalism outfit Pro Publica published a leaked email alleging that the former Pennsylvania Homeland Security director James Powers regularly informed gas drilling companies about the activities of environmental activists through a report called the Pennsylvania Intelligence Bulletin.

The bulletin mentions a screening of Gasland in Philadelphia on September 3, 2010, ranking the film with events organised by anarchist groups and the Black Power movement.

Gasland, which won the Special Jury Prize at this year's Sundance Film festival, explores the effect of natural-gas drilling on communities in Pennsylvania. One memorable scene (above) shows a resident setting fire to the contaminated water from his tap ·
