Kate’s mum: the rise and fall of Carole Middleton

Carole Middleton

The press have already cast Carole Middleton in the role of aggressive social climber

Now that Prince William has promised to make an honest woman of his long-standing – some would say long-suffering - girlfriend Kate Middleton, the rest of her clan will have to steel themselves for the media spotlight.

Kate has had trouble with the press herself, her lawyers threatening legal action when the coverage became too intrusive in 2007. Now that she is set to become a Windsor, the other Middletons, a middle-class family of northern origins based in Berkshire, will find themselves centre stage.

Kate's siblings, James and Pippa, have been accused in the past of using their sister's fame to promote their business interests, but it is their mother Carole who arouses the most ire among royal watchers.

She found herself at the centre of a tabloid storm when Kate and William split up for several months in 2007. According to the press, it was largely Carole's fault. While the Queen was fond of her grandson's girlfriend she was less enamoured of Kate's mother, described by the press as a "ferocious social climber".

Carole's problem is that she doesn't have the right background. Not only is she a former air stewardess, but she and her husband, Michael, made their millions out of a business called Party Pieces that sells children's party supplies. The Wikipedia entry for Kate sniffily points out: "Carole Middleton's maternal family, the Harrisons, were working-class labourers and miners from County Durham."

The Daily Mail has given the Middletons a taste of what to expect with a piece earlier this month entitled: "From BA all the way to Balmoral, the awkward rise of the Middletons."

It bemoans poor Carole's suffering at the hands of "braying royal sycophants" who callously mocked her humble background.

It then, naturally, rehashes those slurs, from the accusation that Kate was only sent to St Andrews in the hope that she would seduce William, to the claim that true bluebloods in royal circles would whisper "Doors to manual" whenever she walked into a room, in reference to her original career.

Carole has also been accused of chewing gum (of the nicotine variety) at William's passing-out parade at Sandhurst in 2006 and then - the greatest sin of all - saying: "Pleased to meet you" instead of "Hello, ma'am" when she was first introduced to the Queen.

Some reports say the poor woman even said "toilet" rather than "lavatory" in the royal presence.

The papers have already cast Carole Middleton as a Hyacinth Bucket figure - the hopeless social climber from the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. Now that her daughter is marrying the future king of England, she is unlikely to escape the role.

It has to be said the eager mother-in-law fell at the first hurdle. In a joint statement issued today, Carole and Michael Middleton said: "As you know, Catherine and Prince William have been going out together for quite a number of years, which has been great for us because we have got to know William very well." ·

I hope there will not be 'three of us' in this marriage, as Princess Diana most famously said. Carole Middleton appears to have played an essential part in this union. Unfortunately, she looks ruthless and has the 'don't mess with me' look about her. I hope she has not bullied and intimidated William into this engagement. I read somewhere that she pressed William last year about an engagement. Yes, she. Not, Kate.

I would certainly not be surprised if everything that was said about her is true, particularly the sending of Kate to St. Andrews to meet and seduce Prince William. I hope he has not been pushed into this marriage, in the same way his father was pushed into marrying his mother, albeit for different reasons, i.e. that she was the most suitable aristocrat to be his bride.

It may sound unbelievable, seeing as he is the one with the wealth and power, but men like Prince William with a reputation to behold, are often vulnerable in this way. I know from personal experience. It would be very interesting to hear from any of Prince William's other girlfriends what they think of this.

This is more a commentary on what to expect in the way of coverage from the rest of the press - especially the Daily Mail which fawns with its claws out.
I rather agree that "pleased to meet you " gives something away about the greeter. I've never found it a very authentic first response, myself.

Thank heavens I was raised in New Zealand, what ignorant snobby tosh concerning the successful family business folks, the Middletons.
Great Kids, lovely family lifestyle, no dirt to dig.

no no all of you - this article was written with a real laugh by the writer , at the total disgustingness (please nominate that word for
addition to the 'new words' list for next year (:>)) of the class system - for which I also have felt a distinct sense of relief from having to deal with it myself for the past 30 yrs (I live in US)
I watch Mrs Bucket with great hilarity knowing how many of 'em I had around me in my childhood in UK !
It's a sorry mess and really makes me ashamed, except that most of the UK sees it for what it is - pathetic !!
I really hope that William and Kate really love each other and can be left alone to have a happy life. God help them - would any of us want to be in their shoes - no thanks.
To her mum - 'bathroom' or "restroom' is mostly used in US and I always thought that was nicer and more anonymous of what we are actually going DO in that little room ( why tell the world any more than that ) - she could actually start a new trend in UK and wipe the sniggers off their faces !!
What a silly conversation (:>)

So the 'true bluebloods' think William should have had an inbred virgin picked for him instead of marrying the woman he loves? Worked well for his Dad, didn't it?
The whole article reads like a desperate attempt to write something - anything - about their engagement instead of finding a real piece of news to work on.

Toilet? Lavatory? No doubt one would believe that the Queen of England does not fart nor take a dump like us mere "working class" mortals! If this nonsense is allowed to continue then it is no wonder that more and more people, particularly in the "colonies" are turning their backs on the in-bred descendants of the biggest thugs and villains which defines so-called "royalty".

The class system at work; why not to live in Britain, and a main reason why I went to Canada.

Ckisckens? Those too!

"the future king of England"?
Counting ckisckens there, maybe.

This article is disgusting and absolute rubbish. Please report the news instead of manufacturing news

How bloodt stupid. What is wrong with being working class? Remeber all the Royal families of Europe that were 'bleeders', carried by the woman and affecting the males. Kate seems to me an attractive and genuine young women. The Royal family needs some fresh blood - should really have ben an American divorcee. I suspect a lot of snobs have lost out to Kate. Hu-bloody-ra
