Amanda Knox flies home to Seattle via London
The flight home via London, the slandered police, the angry prosecutor... Seven questions answered
When will Amanda Knox go home?Today. She is already en route to London, where she will change planes and fly home to Seattle. She was driven away from Capanne prison last night apparently headed to an out-of the way Agriturismo bed and breakfast. There had been rumours in Perugia of a private jet being laid on by one of the US television networks. In the event, she is reported to have flown BA from Rome to London.
What does yesterday's verdict mean exactly? In essence, the appeal process gave Knox and Sollecito a retrial, complete with new witnesses called. The two judges and six jurors decided the evidence used to convict them in December 2009 had been unreliable. However, Knox was still guilty of slandering a local bar owner, Patrick Lumumba, having told police he had committed the murder when he turned out to have a cast-iron alibi. For that, she was given a three-year sentence. Having already spent four years in jail - first on remand, then serving her 26-year sentence for murder - she was free to leave.
What about the extra year she spent in jail?Having spent a year longer in custody than the three-year sentence imposed for slandering Lumumba, the Knox family would be entitled to sue the Perugia police for wrongful arrest and imprisonment. They also have reason to ask why the original one-year sentence for slandering Lumumba was conveniently raised to three.
What about slandering the police? There is an outstanding charge against Amanda Knox of slandering the police when she accused them of using heavy-handed interrogation techniques as a result of which, she has always claimed, she gave self-incriminating evidence. Given the collapse of the murder case, it seems likely this matter will disappear.
Why did Kercher's father call the result 'ludicrous'? Meredith's father John Kercher, who has remained in Surrey while his wife and surviving daughter meet the press in Perugia this morning, told the Daily Mirror that yesterday's not-guilty verdict was "ludicrous". He asked: "How can they ignore all the other evidence? I thought the judge might play it safe and uphold the conviction but reduce the sentence. But this result is crazy." Other evidence seemingly dismissed in the quashing of the murder conviction included Raffaele Sollecito's inability to support Amanda Knox's alibi that she spent the night of Meredith's murder at his apartment, watching films and making love. Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, furious at yesterday's verdict, has announced this morning that he will appeal.
Will Amanda Knox publish a book?Almost definitely. It is understood that she has been working on her memoirs – as well as improving her Italian – during her time in Capanne prison. She can expect a publishing deal worth well over $1m.
When will she give her first TV interview? It remains unclear whether a US network has already paid for an early first interview. She may decide to keep a distance from the media until she is ready to publish her book. On the other hand, the Knox family is thought to have some high bills to meet for journeying back for forth from Seattle to Perugia over the last four years. There is also the matter of the Seattle-based PR agency Gogerty Marriott which has been heavily involved in promoting Amanda’s innocence. It is possible their reward will be a cut of any interview or publishing deal. ·

When justice is dispensed this way, you know its time to turn to your faith for support, guidance and protection. My heart goes out to Meredith's family. I hope her soul rests in peace.
The press got her off, never mind justice but lets be honest, the USA does not know what that word means, just ask the relations of Troy Davis. What does this mean to justice? It means that in the USA it does not exist. She is seen as a means of getting money, never mind who is to blame. Lets not forget something else, there was a murder victim in all of this but nothing is said about that by the yanks. Why was Knox so guilty and then with all the media pressure she suddenly becomes innocent? The third person involved in all of this has been found guilty even on appeal using THE SAME EVIDENCE. Work that one out! USA, you wonder why everyone hates you, now you know why. You cannot expect to ride over everyone and everything with out a backlash.
The judge didn't ignore any evidence. This was a retrial and judges and jury found her not guilty.
And what sort of country prosecutes peope for slander when they claim to have been brutalised by the police? Is this really western Europe in 2011?
There is still the third stage to go - to the Cassazione. However, the bird has flown. Extradition works only one way in America.
