Foxy Knoxy’s new nickname
Amanda Knox, the American on trial for the murder of Meredith Kercher, is spending a second birthday in jail
Amanda Knox, the American on trial for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Italy, has been known ever since the killing occurred in November 2007 by the nickname 'Foxy Knoxy'. But as she turns 22 her mother has revealed that her prison guards have their own pet name for her - Bambi.
Many of Knox's family have travelled to Italy as she celebrates her second birthday behind bars at the maximum-security Casa Circondariale Capanne prison near Perugia, and her mother Edda Mellas says that they have a "huge stack" of cards and gifts for her.
She also explained her daughter's new moniker: "The guards call her Bambi. Maybe it's to do with her big eyes and her innocence or because she is a helpless animal."
Knox is currently on trial for the murder of Kercher, who it is claimed was killed during a sex game involving two others - Knox's then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and Ivory Coast drifter Rudy Guede - at the house they shared.
Expert witnesses for the defence have claimed this week that a knife found with the DNA of both the victim and Knox on it could not have been used in the killing. Dr Carlo Torre, one of Italy's foremost forensics experts, said the weapon was "not compatible" with the wounds to Kercher's neck.
Prof Torre also said that bruises found on Kercher's body were not evidence that she had been held down but instead were caused by her "knocking" into the floor and furniture.
However, there is no end in sight for the trial of Knox and Sollecito. The court has only been sitting two days a week and there have been further delays as judge Giancarlo Massei has been ill.
After next week's evidence there will be a two-month summer break.
Guede, 21, has already been found guilty of the murder and sexual assault of Kercher and was sentenced to 30 years in jail after a fast-track trial. ·
