Winehouse ‘spent £1,200 on drugs’ the night she died
Drugs ‘fixer’ claims he arranged deal and will reportedly speak to police today
A London drug 'fixer' who claims he helped Amy Winehouse buy £1,200 worth of crack cocaine and heroin is reportedly to be re-interviewed by police later today. Tony Azzopardi alleges that he took the singer, whose family claim she spent her last night at home playing the drums, to a "Mr Big" drug dealer the evening before she died.
Azzopardi, who says he became friends with Winehouse through her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, insists he wants to help the police piece together the singer's final hours and let her family "know the truth about what happened". The 56-year-old told the Daily Mirror: "I want to help them out - but I'm worried about my safety."
Azzopardi, who has a long list of convictions and a history of drug and alcohol abuse, says he ran into Winehouse in Camden on Friday night, the evening before she was found dead at her home in Camden Square nine days ago. Several people have already claimed that they saw the singer outside local pub The Good Mixer that night.
Azzopardi says Winehouse pulled up alongside him in a black cab about 11.30pm and asked him to help her buy drugs. The pair took the taxi to West Hampstead, where he called a local dealer from a phone box. A short time later, he alleges, the singer handed over £1,200 for half-an-ounce of crack and the same quantity of heroin.
The fixer says Winehouse then dropped him off in nearby Archway. Hours later, on Saturday July 23, her bodyguard found her dead at home.
Winehouse's family, who are still waiting for the results of toxicology reports to establish the cause of her death, have insisted that the singer stayed in on the night before she died and played drums. Last night they said that they were not convinced that Azzopardi's account fitted with Winehouse's movements. Nor have police found any evidence of drugs or drugs paraphernalia in her home.
Azzopardi's lawyer Tim Bittlestone told the Mirror that he and his client had already talked to detectives at Kentish Town police station. "We will speak to them again on Monday." ·
