A minor road accident on May 6 in which David Beckham drove into the rear of a stalled car on a busy Los Angeles freeway has come back to haunt him.

According to the TMZ website, tapes of the 911 emergency calls made by other motorists suggest he was driving carelessly just before the accident.

One caller, who claimed to have been driving behind the footballer's black Cadillac Escalade SUV for several miles, alleged that Beckham was "driving recklessly" and "speeding really bad" before hitting the car.

Another caller claimed Beckham was "definitely speeding", was pulling in and out of the carpool lane - where the victim's car had stalled - and was "breaking a couple traffic laws".

At the time of the accident on the southbound 405 freeway, Beckham and his son Brooklyn, who was with him in the SUV, escaped unhurt. The driver of the stalled car was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.

According to TMZ, a spokesman for Beckham has told the website: "As unfortunate as accidents are, David was not cited by the police at the scene for any violations."

Beckham's contract with LA Galaxy expires this year but he and his wife Victoria - who is expecting their fourth child - have expressed a wish to stay in the States. ·
