Dolphin-lover Hayden is no hero in Japan
Hayden Panettiere, who plays a high school cheerleader in the hit TV show Heroes, says she's a wanted woman in Japan. An arrest warrant has been issued for the 18-year-old (right) after she surfed into Japanese waters with Save the Whales activists to stop a dolphin hunt.
Late last month, Panettiere paddled her surfboard close to a shipload of fishermen and tried to interfere with an annual dolphin hunt in a cove near Taiji in southwestern Japan. Taiji is home to a tenth of Japan's dolphin catch.
The incident drew worldwide attention when video - including footage of Panettiere weeping on shore after being turned back by the fishing boat's propellers - reached the internet. In the footage, Panettiere sobs uncontrollably and tells the camera that the hunters speared the dolphins to death despite their demonstration.
Afterwards, Panettiere and her fellow surfers drove straight to Osaka airport and left the country to avoid arrest for trespass. Back in Los Angeles, Panettiere told the E! channel that arrest warrants have been issued for her and her friends - and she has no regrets. "I was very excited that people were interested in what we did," she said. "In [Hollywood], you tend to only get publicity for not wearing underwear or going to rehab." ·
