Agyness Deyn takes top model prize

Agyness Deyn, wearing a black feathered gown by Giles Deacon, won Model of Year at the British Fashion Awards in London. Agyness (pronounced Agnes) has made a real impact on the international fashion scene this year with her trademark crop - sometimes brunette, sometimes red, but on this occasion back to blonde - and confident personality.

Her journey from a northern chip shop to the catwalks of London and Milan - not to mention the cover of American Vogue - comes as no surprise to those who have watched her early progress. "She's amazing," says one fashionista. "Her casual elegance makes you think of the 1940s screen siren Rita Hayworth; she has the catch-me-if-you-can independence of Katherine Hepburn."

With fashion icon Amy Winehouse calling off all public appearances, and ageing goddess Kate Moss on a tightrope, Agyness is the new dominant force in British fashion. Also at Tuesday night's awards, Stella McCartney was named designer of the year and Christopher Kane best new designer. ·
