Did Gordon tell a porkie?

Michael Cashman, the former EastEnders actor and member of Labour's national executive committee, has embarrassed Gordon Brown with an unhelpful note of the private discussions of the NEC last Saturday over 'Donorgate'. David Cameron, the Tory leader, tackled Brown at Prime Minister's Questions today over whether the Whitty inquiry into proxy donations by property developer David Abrahams had been delayed - just a few days after it was set up - because of the separate police inquiry.

Cameron asked in the Commons: "Last week the Prime Minister set great store by the investigation established under Lord Whitty, which he described as urgent. Will he confirm that, this week, the inquiry has had to be partially suspended?"

The Prime Minister responded: "No, the inquiry is not suspended. Lord Whitty continues to bring together and collate information, but the interviewing of people will be at the discretion of the police, as I said in my letter to the Metropolitan police."

Really? Maybe the turmoil of the past few days has got to the PM. To jog his memory, we reprint Cashman's 'confidential' report - sent out to Labour backbenchers this week. It states that "The Electoral Commission had referred matters to the police therefore aspects of the Whitty review would have to be placed on hold." ·
