Burma’s man in London disappears

LAST UPDATED AT 13:32 ON Fri 9 May 2008

Despite the fact the death toll in Burma is now in the region of 100,000, a figure that will no doubt rise in the coming days, the Burmese ambassador in London has been conspicuous by his silence.

One might imagine that Mr Nay Win, who has been in situ since May 19, 1995, would be rushing around the television studios, briefing journalists and having round-the-clock audiences at Downing Street. However, an apparent oasis of calm reigns at the Burmese Embassy – or as the military junta who run the country prefer it, the Embassy of the Union of Myanmar.

Thus far Nay Win has made no public utterance - not a word - and staff at the embassy, which is located at 19a Charles Street, Mayfair, are similarly tight-lipped when pressed for details about his excellency's response to the unfolding humanitarian disaster. The First Post placed a call to the press attache, but was informed that any questions concerning Nay Win's movements (or any personal details) must be submitted by fax. And despite having a staff of 11, subsequent calls – the number is 0207 409 7035 - were directed straight to answerphone, so clearly something is going on.

No doubt they are dealing with inquiries from UK-domiciled Anglo-Burmese, among them jazz singer Jamie Callum and model Melanie Sykes, keen for news of friends and family. However, it might be more efficacious to send an email to the embassy at Melondon@btconnect.com. Sadly, the latest posting on the country's official website - myanmar.com -  is unhelpful. Dated May 1 it reveals only that Senior General Than Shwe welcomed back the head of Prime Minister General Thein Sein (pronounced, possibly, the insane) from a trip to Thailand.
