Stuart Rose defends cleavage-revealing tops
Sir Stuart Rose, the silver-haired executive chairman of Marks & Spencer, was attacked at a shareholders’ meeting last week for losing track of his customers’ needs, particularly on the clothing front, where he was accused of encouraging designers to give all the dresses and tops plunging, cleavage-revealing necklines (as seen modelled here by M&S model Myleene Klass).
But he tells the Independent today that this is nonsense. "That’s driving me nuts," he says, "It’s a particularly ignorant assumption. One girl’s cleavage is another girl’s fashion statement. We cater for all necklines." Commenting on the dip in the M&S share price, he added: "In times like this everyone thinks they know the solution. Everywhere I go people are giving me advice. It makes the job a lot harder to do when you’re at the top." ·
