Keira Knightley incensed by trailer suggesting link to Diana
Keira Knightley has reacted angrily to the decision to use Diana, Princess of Wales as a means of promoting her latest movie, The Duchess, an adaptation of Amanda Foreman's best-selling autobiography of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, the 18th-century beauty and socialite.
In a trailer for the film, footage of the late Princess of Wales is juxtaposed with images of Knightley playing Georgiana (pictured), while on the screen appear the words: "The two were related by ancestry and united by destiny" before a voice says: "History repeats itself."
"I am Georgiana," says Knightley, 23. "I am not Diana. The film is not about Diana."
It can be argued that the film's promoters have some justification for
making the link. The duchess was born Georgiana Spencer and was Diana's great-great-great-great aunt. She was also known for her myriad affairs, though perhaps not as many as Diana enjoyed.
But Knightley is not the only one annoyed by the trailer. Amanda Foreman says: "There is absolutely no reason to have done this trailer, which is a bad joke. The marketing people probably thought the only way they could get the young popcorn-eating brigade to see this film was if they made some comparison with Diana. But they did not need to and should not have done it."
She is particularly peeved by the 'united by destiny' tag. "I don't actually think that Georgiana died in a carriage crash," she says. ·
