Gillian Anderson to whack Giorgio Armani in film about fur

It was all smiles on Wednesday night as actress Gillian Anderson skipped down the red carpet in Leicester Square for the London premiere of How To Make Friends and Alienate People, the big-screen adaptation of Toby Young's best-selling book about life as a contributor at Vanity Fair magazine, which also stars Margot Stilley and Simon Pegg (pictured with Anderson). However the Hollywood actress had more important things on her mind, namely her decision to spearhead a campaign against the Italian designer Giorgio Armani to stop him using real animal fur in his fashion creations.

The X Files star and animal rights campaigner is furious with Armani for going back on his word about not using fur – he incorporated rabbit and fox fur in his latest collection shown in Milan this week – and has agreed to make a hard-hitting film for Peta, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, attacking him for his decision. She told the Daily Mail: "I am stunned that Armani has gone back on his word. I can't understand why anyone would want to use real fur, and especially rabbit because it is so easy to replicate as the pile is so short."

You can see her point. Last year in Paris, Armani announced he would no longer use real fur after viewing a disturbing video made by Peta, whose high-profile supporters include Stella McCartney and Ricky Gervais. What has particularly infuriated Anderson, who is expecting her second child, is a new line of fur coats for toddlers and even a fur snow-suit for babies. Says Dan Mathews of Peta: "Gillian will be narrating our new video which shows our investigations in France and China from where we believe Armani gets his rabbit fur."

Meanwhile, Armani insists he is honouring his commitment to refrain from future use of any animal furs other than humanely sourced rabbit fur. A spokesman said: "As a luxury fashion house which has always been attentive to this issue, we feel we are being unfairly targeted in comparison to our competitors." ·
