In Town: Jay Jopling whoops it up at the Miami Beach Art Fair

Despite the recession, there were no shortages of people wanting to party at this year’s Miami Beach Basel Art Fair, which closed on Sunday. Perhaps the liveliest event was a party hosted on Friday night by Franca Sozzani, the editor-in-chief of L'Uomo Vogue, which was thrown in honour of Bruce Weber, the American fashion photographer and film-maker.

Among the guests were the fashion designer Marc Jacobs, White Cube owner Jay Jopling (off the leash since divorcing his wife, Sam Taylor-Wood), Naomi Campbell and Lola Schnabel (pictured with Jacobs), the daughter of the painter and film director Julian Schnabel.

While most dealers admitted sales were down on last year – one London gallerist said there was an agreeable absence of hedge fund managers "buying up Damien Hirst by the yard" - it was certainly not all gloom and doom on the stands. "There were fewer celebrities, but the proper collectors were out in force," said one US dealer. "We were expecting a crash, but we got a soft landing." ·
