Nicole Kidman braves the cold for Australia premiere
Wearing a see-through, sparkly white dress, Nicole Kidman braved the cold in London last night to attend the premiere of Baz Luhrmann's Australia, the sweeping epic set in the actress's native country. Kidman, who was accompanied by the film's hunky male lead, Hugh Jackman (pictured with Kidman), did not choose to comment on whether this would be her last film – in a recent interview she said she wanted to focus her energies on being a mother and perhaps have another child with her husband, Keith Urban - and instead discussed Lurhmann’s latest effort.
"I hope people like it and it makes them fall in love with my country," she said. "I hope they realise it's funny and romantic and it's a popcorn movie."
The film, which centres on a love affair between an upper-class English woman, played by Kidman, and a cattleman (Jackman), has received mixed reviews, with the Daily Telegraph saying that "Nicole Kidman's ridiculous Lady Sarah Ashley fulfils another ashamed stereotype – that of the witless Brit abroad."
The New Yorker called is "preposterous epic kitsch", describing Lurhrmann as being "lost in the desert". Wrote film critic David Denby: "He wants to create huge, throbbing set pieces, but he never establishes a standard of normal reality from which those set pieces would be an exultant release. The movie is all bitter partings and joyous reunions and nasty Japanese dive-bombers who fly in and mess up everything."
Sir Elton John, who wrote a song for the film, also attended the premiere, along with the model and actress Twiggy. ·
