Kate Winslet leads the Brits in Golden Globe nominations

British actors have secured more than 20 nominations in this year's Golden Globes, which are looked upon by many as a dress rehearsal for the Oscars. Kate Winslet is nominated twice: for best actress for her role in Revolutionary Road - in which she and Leonardo DiCaprio (pictured with Winslet) team up for the first time since Titanic - and for best supporting actress in The Reader, despite early reviewers complaining that the post-war drama trivialises the Holocaust.

However, Winslet is all too aware that she has been nominated for a Globe five times before and never won. She said earlier this month: "Someone said to me the other day, 'How do you feel about going down in history as possibly the most-nominated loser?' And I said, 'I'd feel very bad about that. Extremely bad about that.'"

She will have her work cut out: among the other nominations for best actress is Kristin Scott Thomas for her well-received role in the French language film I've Loved You So Long.

Two British films are in contention for best picture, Frost/Nixon, a dramatisation of the famous TV encounter between Sir David Frost and the disgraced former US President Richard Nixon, and Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle's movie about a boy from the Bombay slums who bids for the jackpot on India's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

While DiCaprio is nominated for best actor in Revolutionary Road, Brad Pitt is favourite to win for the fantasy film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which, along with Frost/Nixon, leads the field with five nominations and is tipped to win best film at the Oscars.

Among those nominated for best supporting actor is Ralph Fiennes for his role in The Duchess; he also has a nomination in the TV category. To the disappointment of the British producers of Frost/Nixon, Michael Sheen was not nominated for his portrayal of David Frost.

The winners of the 66th annual Golden Globes will be announced on January 11.
