Kate Winslet and Kristin Scott Thomas to fight it out at Baftas
After winning two Golden Globes on Sunday, Kate Winslet (left) has been nominated for two best actress awards in this year's British Academy Film Awards for her roles in Revolutionary Road, in which she stars with Leonardo DiCaprio, and The Reader. However, she is up against stiff competition: Kristin Scott Thomas (right) in the French language film, I've Loved You So Long, Angelina Jolie in Clint Eastwood’s film Changeling and Meryl Streep in Doubt.
The main nominations, which were announced by the actresses Hayley Atwell and Bond girl Gemma Arterton at Bafta's London headquarters this morning, also include Slumdog Millionaire, which is up for 11 Baftas in total, including best film, best British film and best director. The Danny Boyle movie has already won four Golden Globes and is being widely tipped for an Oscar. Its main competition is the Brad Pitt movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, an adaptation of an F Scott Fitzgerald short story, which is also nominated in 11 categories.
The late Heath Ledger joins Philip Seymour Hoffman in the best supporting actor category, where Brad Pitt is also recognised for his comic turn in Burn After Reading. Pitt is also up for best actor for Benjamin Button. Dev Patel is a surprise inclusion in this category for his role in Slumdog.
Jonathan Ross will host this year's ceremony, to be held at the Royal Opera House in London on February 8.
