Asian babe Bipasha Basu sued by militant Islamic politician
Playing a bespectacled, burqua-wearing, militant Kashmiri separatist in a new Bollywood film was always going to a tough call for Bipasha Basu (pictured), the beautiful Indian actress who is feted as Asia's sexiest woman. However, it now looks like she won't get the chance to test her acting skills on the part because the woman she was set to portray, Asiya Andrabi (insert), is suing the makers of the movie to stop it going ahead.
The objections of Andrabi, who became a women's leader in the 1980s and formed Dukhtaran e Millat, are simple. "I don't want to see my character played by a woman like Bipasha Basu who prefers to be semi-nude most of the times," she told the Daily Telegraph. "She might be glamorous but she is an undignified woman and is part of the immorality spreading industry - Bollywood. I am a religious woman who believes in Islamic values, observes purdah and refrains from evil deeds. More importantly I am the only Asiya Andrabi on this earth, so let it be just one."
The film in which Basu, 34, was to appear is called Lamhaa, a rollicking Bollywood take on the plight of Kashmir and the lives of militants fighting Indian rule. At first all went well, with the producers assuring Andrabi that she would be truthfully portrayed and that the movie would be sympathetic to the Kashmiri separatists, of which she is a leading force. Andrabi, who says there are only two countries in the world - "Muslims and non-muslims" - and advocates jihad to advance the power of Islam, believes Kashmir should be allowed to leave the Indian union and join Pakistan.
However, it now looks like the legal action may be unnecessary. Basu, fearing for her safety as a result of the controversy whipped up Andrabi, is said to have quit the film.
