Christian Bale says sorry on LA radio
The British actor Christian Bale has given a Los Angeles radio station the scoop of the week by phoning in to apologise for his recently revealed tirade against a colleague on the set of Terminator: Salvation.
After what he described as a "miserable week" dealing with the fall-out from the revelation, he told listeners to the Kevin and Bean show on KROQ-FM: "What I want to stress is that I have no confusion whatsoever. I was out of order beyond belief... I acted like a punk. I make no excuses for it. It is inexcusable."
As all of Hollywood now knows, Bale blew up when Shane Hurlbut, the director of photography on the new Terminator film, broke the actor's concentration during the shooting of a scene with Bryce Dallas Howard last July. The episode came to public attention when an audio tape - including the line "I want you off the set! You prick!" and a lot more besides - was posted this week on the TMZ website.
In his long phone call to KROQ-FM on Friday, Bale said he was aware that commentators were suggesting he somehow considered himself "better than other people". But "nothing could be farther from the truth", he tried to assure listeners. He admitted: "I am not comfortable with this notion of being a movie star, I'm an actor, and I don't quite know how to handle this movie star thing."
By way of mitigation, he explained that he plays John Connor, son of the "crazy" Sarah Connor, in the film. He was "trying to show a little of that in-the-blood craziness" and when Hurlbut interrupted the shoot he confused fact and fiction. He was "half John Connor and half Christian Bale" when he let rip.
Asked about his relationship with the luckless Hurlbut, Bale said: "We resolved it that very day. We went on working for several hours... We worked together for at least a month after that. Everything is resolved between us."
