Ostler replaces Grieg at Tatler magazine
It won't come as a surprise to the staff at the Tatler that their new editor is to be Catherine Ostler (pictured), editor of the London Evening Standard’s weekly magazine, ES.
Ostler, the wife of Conde Nast's general manager Albert Read, was odds-on favourite to edit the glossy as soon as current editor Geordie Grieg announced that he would be moving on to the Evening Standard as editor, following its purchase by Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev.
However, Ostler is reported to have fought off fierce competition in the battle for Tatler's editorship. Although she was spotted having lunch with Conde Nast chief Nicholas Coleridge in January, Toby Young, the author of the best-selling How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, was tipped as a viable contender alongside William Cash, William Sitwell and Rachel Johnson. Somewhat bizarrely, Princess Michael of Kent is also rumoured to have been on the shortlist.
But it was the Oxford graduate, who is said to have started her career as a lowly unpaid intern, who was deemed worthy of the high society bible. She and Grieg will pass each other next month when they both move to pick up their new posts. But Ostler may enjoy more of a honeymoon period over at Tatler - Grieg is expected to get straight to work on "making assessments" and "planning for the future".
According to the Guardian, redundancies at the Standard are expected "within weeks rather than months". Thankfully for all concerned, the Daily Mail & General Trust's chairman Lord Rothermere has stepped in and insisted that the Russian's plan to limit redundancy payoffs to £12,000 was not good enough. The new cap is £75,000. ·
