Johnson and Vaz: the X-cert phone call

LAST UPDATED AT 12:44 ON Thu 12 Feb 2009

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has become embroiled in an almighty row with the Labour MP Keith Vaz, who as chairman of the all-party Home Affairs Committee has been leading the Commons inquiry into the police arrest of shadow immigration minister Damian Green last year.

Some believe that Johnson tipped off the Tory leader David Cameron about the raid when he was informed about the action (as London Mayor, he is also chairman of Metropolitan Police Authority, and would have been informed as a matter of course). Johnson vehemently denies this.

Things appeared to come to a head on Wednesday when Vaz criticised Johnson in an open letter to the media in which he said he had deep "deep concerns" about the evidence Johnson gave at the hearing last Monday.

However, according to the London Evening Standard, behind this public rebuke lies a ferocious, expletive-ridden telephone conversation between Vaz and Johnson, which took place the day after the mayor gave evidence.

According to minutes of the conversation, Johnson allegedly told Vaz that he was "fucking angry"  that an (unnamed) member of the committee had gone on TV suggesting he would be recalled to give evidence a second time because of apparent discrepancies over when he talked to the Tory leader.

Johnson allegedly said to Vaz: "I used to think that you were a straight guy. A man that you could do business with. This is fucking ridiculous."

Vaz is then understood to have challenged the Mayor over how prepared he was for the committee hearing, to which Johnson reportedly replied: "I fucking warned you beforehand that I would not be very good on details."

The Standard includes further choice lines from the alleged Johnson-Vaz call. They include: "You are trying to make me look like a fucking fool” and "The key point that is not getting across [is] I didn't give any fucking information to Cameron."
