Kirsten Gillibrand removes her rifles
The gun-loving New York Democrat who was picked to replace Hillary Clinton when Caroline Kennedy pulled out of the running has been forced to remove the two guns she kept under her bed amid concerns for her safety. Kirsten Gillibrand (pictured) had recently revealed that she kept two weapons where she slept in order to protect her house and family.
Gillibrand’s spokesman said yesterday: "Given that the location of the guns has been disclosed, they have been moved for security reasons." The spokesman also claimed that the mother of two young children had never stored her ammunition in the same place as the guns.
However, this is not the end of the matter for gun control lobbyists in the Democratic Party who are unhappy with the controversial choice of Gillibrand to represent them. Her 100 per cent approval rating among members of the National Rifle Association is a source of embarrassment and anger. As a result, a number of protestors are organising marches this weekend. Gun control activist Joyce Goryki, whose husband was shot and killed in 1993, said: "I am very upset about the whole thing…I don't know why she needs two rifles."
By contrast, those Americans who do enjoy the right to bear arms have been stocking up on weapons and ammo since President Obama came to power because they believe he intends to tighten gun control laws. One gun shop owner in Dallas said recently: "Glocks are a particularly good seller. We can't keep them on the shelf now. Same with assault rifles."
