Saks drops Victoria Beckham’s jeans

While Victoria Beckham has received praise for her latest dress designs, which she previewed at the Waldorf Towers hotel in Manhattan on Monday night, not everyone in the fashion world is happy with the former Spice Girl. According to the New York Post, Saks, the crucially important Fifth Avenue store, has decided not to re-order any more of her denim line, dVB.

The reason for this, the paper claims, is down to Posh giving her dress line exclusively to rival store Bergdorf Goodman, and not them. Says the Post's source: "They were offended when she sold her dress line to Bergdorf's and not to Saks, even though Saks launched her denim line. Bergdorf never carried her jeans, but they got her designer line anyway."

A spokesman for Beckham, the wife of England footballer and sometime underpants model David Beckham, confirmed there were no jeans in stock at Saks, but insisted the brand was doing well at other "leading stores and many independent US fashion retailers".

That may be true, but the Post's source said that while the arrival of the Beckham jeans at Saks was heralded with a media fanfare it did not translate into sales because "nobody wanted to buy $300 jeans from someone who is not a trained designer".

While this is unlikely to ruffle Victoria's feathers, a further claim made by the Post - that the London-based designer Roland Mouret helped her design her current range of dresses - clearly does.

"Roland Mouret has no design input in the Victoria Beckham dress collection," said her spokesman. "Aside from being a friend, his only professional help was introducing Victoria to a seamstress and a London design space when she began the collection."
