Prescott threatens Sir Jackie Stewart

Sir Jackie Stewart's refusal to give up his £4m ambassadorial role with the ruined Royal Bank of Scotland - perhaps he was an inspiration to Sir Fred Goodwin, who as reported here is steadfastly hanging onto his £16m pension pot - has infuriated John Prescott.

Writing on his personal blog, Labour's pugilistic former Deputy PM warns Sir Jackie, a notorious tightwad, that if he doesn't hand back the cash he will release embarrassing details of motor sport's relationship with the Blair Government.

"I know that Sir Jackie never had a problem lobbying government for the impoverished sport that is Formula 1. In fact, as he lived next door to Chequers, he was always bending Tony's ear for a bypass for Silverstone. I should know - I was Transport Secretary at the time!"

The £100m bypass he alludes to was completed in 2002 in time for that year's British Grand Prix - after then Prime Minister Tony Blair approved an extra £8m to speed work up against Whitehall advice. Despite Blair's efforts, Silverstone is to lose the British Grand Prix to Donington from 2010 anyway. Prezza, who proposes launching an online petition to give Sir Jackie a "Knightmare", added: "I personally think we should pitstop Jackie's contract." ·
