Raymond ‘Jaws’ Tooth wins big at the races

Celebrity divorce lawyer Raymond Tooth’s most profitable days are normally spent parting wealthy husbands from their assets. But on Tuesday he won £210,000 at the races when his horse, Punjabi, produced a career-best performance to win the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Unlike his legal triumphs – he most famously won Irina Abramovich a reported £300m settlement from her husband Roman Abramovich – this was a highly unexpected victory, given that Binocular had been the bookies’ favourite by a mile.

"Nicky [Henderson, the trainer] told me on Friday that Punjabi was going terribly well and people seemed to have forgotten about him,” said Tooth, who goes by the nickname ‘Jaws’. “There was all the talk of Binocular, but there you are."

The win marks a massive reversal of fortune for Punjabi - and Tooth. Last year, the nag took a tumble at the Christmas meet at Kempton races, which arguably cost him a £1 million bonus from WBX, the betting exchange.

It is doubtful, however, that the news of his win will prompt Jude Law, Michael Barrymore or Colin Montgomerie to pop the champagne corks. All of them have had to make hefty divorce settlements to their wives as a result of Tooth’s legendary powers of wrangling.
