Moyles warned for calling Will Young gay

Loudmouthed Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles has fallen foul of Ofcom once again. The breakfast show presenter has been slapped on the wrist for what Ofcom described as derogatory comments that promoted negative stereotypes of homosexuality.

The DJ's comments came as he sung spoof versions of two Will Young songs in what Ofcom has described as "an effeminate and high-pitched voice." Lines from the songs, which were sung on Young's birthday on January 20, included: "It's my birthday today, gonna wear my new dress tonight. And I smell nice. I've had a shower and I've shaved my legs," and "Mmm, I like to wear a silly hat, I get camper by the hour, oh would you look at the muck in here. I'm Will Young and I'm gay."

Ofcom was not amused. "Although no doubt intended to be humorous, comments such as these and the manner in which they were delivered, in Ofcom's view, could reasonably have been perceived as hostile and pejorative," said the regulator, which had received eight complaints from listeners.

Moyles has been in hot water for perceived homophobic comments in the past. In 2006 the BBC governors came to his defence when he described a ringtone as "gay". At the time, the governors - a forerunner of the BBC trust - said that Moyles was merely keeping up to date with developments in the English language by using the word to mean 'rubbish'. ·
