Hugh Grant 'worst guest ever' says US host Jon Stewart

Hugh Grant

British actor 'was rude to programme staff and will never be allowed back on The Daily Show'

ACTOR turned Leveson activist Hugh Grant may be something of a national treasure in Britain but he has been named the worst TV chat show guest ever – worse even than Russell Crowe - by American host Jon Stewart.

The presenter of The Daily Show for over a decade, Stewart has interviewed everyone from Barack Obama to Barbra Streisand and won plaudits for his coverage of the 2008 US election.

At a charity fundraiser, in conversation with fellow political satirist Stephen Colbert, Stewart claimed Grant was unpleasant to programme staff, surly and dull and would never be asked back.

"He's giving everyone s*** the whole time, and he's a big pain in the arse," the New York Daily News quotes Stewart saying. The actor apparently spent his time at the studio complaining that he had other places to be.

According to Stewart, Grant was less genial than King Abdullah of Jordan, former Pakistani President General Musharraf and even the Australian actor Russell Crowe, famous for his grouchy manner.

Grant was promoting his 2009 film, Did You Hear About The Morgans?, and asked about the footage Stewart aired during their interview. "What is that clip? It's a terrible clip,” Grant allegedly said.

"Well, then make a better f***ing movie,” Stewart replied.

Did You Hear About The Morgans? was critically panned and, according to some film industry observers, effectively ended Grant's hopes of a Hollywood career.  Recently he has become a leading light in the Hacked Off campaign against media intrusion.

Whether Jon Stewart is a paragon of showbiz virtue is open to question. The Celebrity Café website reports that Stewart told the same audience how he once nearly quit his job after he was told he couldn't change his jokes or add new ones.

“[I told my agent] get me the f*** out of this. These people are insane ... I had to be talked down from a moderately high cliff ... What I did not realise is, a lot of the people who worked there were arseholes." ·

Grant was a 'sour puss' with Andrew Marr the other Sunday also. He should learn to lighten up and not allow his considerable charm to go down the pan!

But Grant was right ti give Marr a hard time. Press intrusion is an important topic and Marr was being his usual pro-Establishment self.

Where is "there?" What job is Stewart talking about?
