Diver says it was 'love at first sight' as tabloid identifies his beau as Oscar-winning screenwriter
TOM DALEY says it was "love at first sight" when he met his boyfriend, the man identified by The Sun as Oscar-winning American screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, the 19-year-old Olympic diver also admitted that deciding to go public about his relationship with a man was "terrifying".
In the interview, to be broadcast on Saturday, Daley says he didn't know if the man he spotted across the room at London's Soho hotel was gay. But the diver managed to get hold of his phone and type "call me", adding his number and a smiley face for good measure. He received a text reply the next day.
"It really was love at first sight," Daley told Ross. "I've never felt anything like it before. I didn't know if he was gay - I was just like, 'OK, this is weird'."
Neither Daley nor 39-year-old Black have confirmed they are in a relationship, but the Sun says the pair met in London in the spring and were spotted together again in Los Angeles in October.
Asked by Ross why he hasn't identified his boyfriend, Daley said: "At the moment, I wouldn't like anything to change. I hope it doesn't get ruined by the media attention, everyone has been so supportive and I hope it continues that way."
The Sun quotes an unnamed friend of the British diver who says Daley is "besotted" with Black. The American is well-known in Hollywood after winning an Oscar for best original screenplay for Milk, his biopic of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. ·
