Millions of people celebrated Halloween at the weekend. The name comes from All Hallows' Even and refers to the night before All Hallows' Day, also known as All Saints' Day. Although its roots are religious, Halloween is now a largely secular festival. It is most popular in America and organisers of the West Hollywood Halloween festival in Santa Monica, above, claim it attracts crowds of up to 500,000.
