American and British troops had contrasting fortunes as they led a 15,000 strong Nato force deep into a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan's Helmand province. While British soldiers met little resistance in their sector of Nad Ali, US troops (above) came under fire from Taliban snipers. Both forces were slowed down by booby-trapped buildings and roadside bombs (IEDs).
