Ricky Gervais as David Brent in 'The Office', the critically acclaimed BBC sitcom which first screened in 2001. Gervais was a 40-year-old failed pop singer when he came to fame as Brent. He has since written another TV series, 'Extras', and has become successful enough in America to host the first Golden Globes of the next decade.
