A Parisian law professor, Evelyne Pisier, has unearthed a 200-year-old law - never repealed - that says it is illegal for women in Paris to wear trousers. According to Pisier, author of 'Le Droit des Femmes' ('The Rights of Women'), many attempts to remove the law have been refused by city authorities. The decree has been watered down over the years - allowing women to wear trousers on horseback and when bicycling - but it is still, in theory, illegal to wear trousers on other occasions. Here both Carla Bruni (left) and the former Colombian hostage Ingrid Betancourt flout the law on the latter's return to Paris in 2008.
