The tsunami was triggered by an 8.3 magnitude earthquake around 125 miles south of the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. The waves caused widespread devastation, flattening villages and sweeping people out to sea - as many as 100 are feared dead. Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa (above), was badly affected.
