Samoan tsunami
Witnesses in American Samoa said four waves between four and six metres high reached as far as a mile inland. They struck the islands in the early morning. Casualties have also been reported in Tonga to the south.
The tsunami was triggered by an 8.3 magnitude earthquake around 125 miles south of Samoa and its neighbour American Samoa. The waves caused widespread devastation, flattening villages and sweeping people out to sea - as many as 100 are feared dead.
