Greece ablaze
Houses threatened by a fire in the village of Kaletzi, north of Athens. The authorities have declared a state of emergency and made thousands of residents evacuate. Greece has had to ask Italy and France to loan it fire-fighting aircraft.
Firefighters prepare to tackle one of the 130 fires have swept through Greece since Thursday, causing devastation to 120,000 hectares of virgin fir and pine forest. It is widely suspected that many of the fires have been started by unscrupulous property developers or farmers who want more space for their animals to graze.
