GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, 1963. VALUE: £40m IN TODAY'S MONEY
Armed robbers including Ronnie Biggs stole £2.6m in used banknotes from the Glasgow to London mail train in August 1963 in the most notorious heist in British history. The gang altered signals to force the train to a stop and then overpowered staff. Most of the money was never recovered but the police investigation led by Jack Slipper led to the capture of the gang. CONVICTIONS: Ronnie Biggs, Buster Edwards and the others were given jail terms of up to 30 years. Biggs escaped from Wandsworth prison and fled to Brazil. He returned to Britain in 2001 to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Two men in suits persuaded security guards to let them into the exclusive shop in New Bond Street on August 6 before drawing handguns and snatching 43 pieces of jewellery including diamond earrings, a gold and platinum diamond rings and watches. They briefly took a staff member hostage and fired handguns into the air as they made their escape through Belgravia and Mayfair in at least three different vehicles. The same jeweller's was also targeted in 2003 when Serbian criminals stole £23m worth of gems.
WANTED: A gang of at least five including getaway drivers are being sought.
