The Woodstock Music & Art Fair opened on August 15, 1969 on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, New York state, 43 miles away from Bob Dylan's home in Woodstock. The four organisers - Michael Lang, John Roberts, Joel Rosenman and Artie Kornfeld - persuaded some of the most famous singers and bands of the era to attend, with the help of astronomical performance fees. Dylan himself, who was booked for the Isle of Wight festival two weeks later, declined to play, as did The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull.
