ELIE WIESEL – The Nobel Laureate (above, centre) was introduced to the fraudster by a wealthy friend who had known Madoff for 50 years. Wiesel, who survived Auschwitz, went on to invest all £15 million raised by Foundation for Humanity, the charity he runs. The Foundation had planned to build a new children’s centre in Jerusalem with the money, and Wiesel says he finds it difficult to forgive a man who has hurt so many people.
