‘(Life with) Maggie’ by Ofer Wolberger at the Michael Hoppen Gallery from June 18 to July 25, 2009. 3 Jubilee Place, London SW3 3TD. Above ‘James Dean’s Last Stop, Lost Hills, CA’, Ofer Wolberger, 2008, courtesy Michael Hoppen Contemporary
The sole protagonist in Ofer Wolberger's images is a woman called Maggie - a recurring fictional character, always played by Wolberger's fiancee. In '(Life with) Maggie', his eponymous heroine travels from place to place, posing for photographs just like any other tourist. Except that Maggie is also unlike any other tourist. Her weird, mask-like face and retro fashion sense make her thoroughly conspicuous - a complete anomaly within her surroundings. She's an odd mixture of contradictions: real and unreal; insider and outsider; private individual and public facade. Her photo album seems more like the record of a strange and lonely life than a cache of happy memories…
